Holiday Park Switcher Engine (1936)
Details
Holiday Park Switcher Engine (1936) This historic Switcher Engine No. 1001-040, built circa 1936 by the Baldwin Locomotive Company (Philadelphia, PA), sits proudly near the playground at the north end of Holiday Park in Fort Lauderdale. Though its massive black body, towering smokestack, and red-domed tanks give it the look of a traditional steam locomotive, it was actually oil-fired, not coal-powered. Originally used at the Seaboard Railroad’s Fort Lauderdale yard, this may have been the first switcher engine to operate in the city. The locomotive, later donated by the Florida East Coast Railroad and the Seaboard Coastline Railroad, now serves as a striking monument to South Florida’s railroad history.
